GRAPHICS DRIVERS FOR UBUNTU:

The answer may be lack of a compatible video driver. Run this in Terminal:
lshw -c video
On the “Configuration” line it should say “driver=something” where “something” is the currently used video driver. If it is “llvmpipe”, your video card’s graphics acceleration is not in use, most likely because your card is too old. If it is “nouveau”, try installing NVIDIA’s proprietary driver, because nouveau is really slow.
